Situated within the heart of New Haven’s historic Dwight Street district, 338 Elm Street is a living testament to the harmonious blend of the past and the present. Originating around 1861 as a firehouse, this venerable structure has undergone a series of remarkable transformations, culminating in its current identity as “The Place 2 Be” – a contemporary, vibrantly hued restaurant that respects its rich heritage while embracing the future. The transformation of this architectural gem commenced in 1977 when Fitzwilly’s restaurant embarked on the introduction of a Balcony Floor that brought dynamic spatial depth to the expansive area, enhancing its versatility and appeal. Throughout the years, successive modifications and enhancements have further enriched the building’s character. Today, as “The Place 2 Be,” the building stands reborn, infused with an invigorating fusion of modernity and nature. Bright, contemporary spaces seamlessly merge with lush greenery both inside and out. A magnificent man-made tree takes center stage in the dining area, providing a captivating focal point that merges the indoors with the Elm City’s natural world. This new design – a collaboration between interior designers and architects – has breathed fresh life into this historic venue, infusing it with graphic textures and vibrant colors, high- and low-tech lighting, and unique design moments that encourage guests to craft enduring memories.
