Welcome to the Team, Jaden Young!

We’re excited to welcome Jaden Young to Patriquin Architects as our newest Designer! Jaden recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. We sat down with her for a short Q&A to learn more about what brought her to the field, what inspires her work, and what she’s most looking forward to.

What originally drew you to architecture?

Growing up, I always gravitated towards the arts. I took almost every drawing course I could through grade school and into high school, often referring to videos each night to further develop my skills. Pairing my illustrations with historical references and writing was also something I delved into. I wanted to ensure that I could capture representation in my art and draw attention to both cultural representation and the environment. Architecture is a field that truly encapsulates these passions for me.

What was your previous experience (education, work) prior to Patriquin?

Before joining the firm, I worked as the UMass Amherst Campus Planning intern. I contributed to a range of design tasks, including renderings, elevations for signage, and producing conceptual floorplans for building renovations on campus. It was incredibly valuable to assist in the development of these local spaces and think critically about the user experience. In addition to my internship, I was president of Women In Architecture at the university. In this role, I organized events and facilitated conversations with practicing female architects in New England. This created opportunities for both myself and other students to connect and learn from professionals in the field. I also had the chance to mentor younger students, which was incredibly rewarding and reinforced the importance of representation in architecture.

What excites you about architecture / design and what are your favorite parts of the design / construction / project delivery process?

I am very drawn to the community impact of architecture and the story behind the materiality of a structure. This was truly reinforced when I worked on the UMass Design Build project during and preceding my junior year. We got the opportunity to design and build a high-performance, affordable home for a family in Holyoke, MA. The course exposed me to local materials and their assembly, while educating the city on the impact of our efforts on the environment.

What “hats” (roles, strengths, etc.) do you see yourself wearing at Patriquin?

I see myself being flexible with the roles I can take on at Patriquin. I’m eager to learn from a diverse set of perspectives and backgrounds.

Favorite restaurant / coffee shop / park / place you can be found in New Haven?

My favorite coffee shop I’ve been to in New Haven is “Koffee?” I love that the furniture there is second-hand and that there is a lot of character in the space.

Welcome, Jaden—we’re glad to have you on the team!
