THE SKINNY ON BOSTON’S NARROWEST HOUSE

Posted on June 21, 2010 by Karin • Filed under:

The narrowest rowhouse in Boston was built in 1874 allegedly as a ‘spite house’. According to local legend, 2 brothers inherited land from their father. While one brother was away on military duty, the other built himself a large home, with only a sliver of property left as open space. The second brother, on his return, built himself a very narrow house to ruin his brother’s view to the cemetery and the ocean beyond.

Though the front wall measures only 9.25 feet and the back one only 10.4, the house is amazingly efficient. Each of the 4 floors houses a particular function: on the ground floor, eating – a kitchen and small dining area; on the second floor, living – a sitting area and bathroom; on the third and fourth floors, sleeping – a bedroom and study area for each. There is privacy, there is light, there is room for all basic needs.

After 135 years, it’s very functional and has become another story along the Freedom Trail in Boston’s North End.
