In September 2018, Slate School opened its doors for the first time on a picturesque 25-acre parcel of land in North Haven, CT featuring dense forest, open meadows and plentiful native wildlife. An independent K-6 focuses on child-centered learning, the project was carefully designed and built to exacting environmental standards. Building on the success of this elementary school, the School leadership engaged our team to design a new Slate Upper School, which will offer student-centered project-based education for students in grades 7-12 which is “slated” to open its doors in Fall 2024.
Our design for Slate Upper School uses its site’s natural and built features to develop a new campus feel with three components. The first is an extensive renovation to an existing Church building into a flexible collaboration, conversation, and performing arts space for the Slate community. The second is a new academic building housing an array of flexible classrooms, workshop spaces, and lounges with sweeping views of the nearby Sleeping Giant State Park. The third is a central courtyard between the two buildings which will act as a social and symbolic hub for community gathering and activity.
