ADOBE ABODE

Posted on October 15, 2010 by Karin • Filed under: ,

A modern adobe house in Albuquerque, based on the traditional courtyard house.

An entry courtyard welcomes visitors to a shaded, landscaped outdoor vestibule that brings light into the kitchen and family room. Once in the house, a second large courtyard at the rear illuminates the living, dining and bedroom spaces. Where needed, smaller courtyards or skylights above light the rest of the rooms.
The thick adobe walls create a well-insulated structure. Natural materials – exposed ceiling beams and lintels over the large windows and doors, terracotta floor tiles and heavy wood doors – create a timeless atmosphere. In the back courtyard, a kiva fireplace creates a gathering place in the cool evenings.
